Birth of the Cool is a comprehensive, digestible exploration of the life and music of one of the most iconic figures in jazz history. Serving as a captivating narrative that appeals to both seasoned fans and newcomers, the film adeptly chronicles Miles Davis' groundbreaking contributions to the industry, showcasing his innovative approach to music and his enduring influence on generations of musicians. Through captivating archival footage and interviews with collaborators, Birth of the Cool offers a compelling account of Davis' evolution as an artist, from his early days in the bebop era to his pioneering fusion experiments. For further exploration into the life and career of Miles, his autobiography co-written by Quincy Troupe is an excellent companion. Most of the material used for the voice-over of Miles in BOTC was culled from the passages of this book, and while the film serves as a great introduction to his work, Miles: the Autobiography offers great insight into the duality of Miles the man and Miles the musician.
